Standards Update

The Heat Pump Product Standard MCS 007 v6.1 has undergone a major update and will now be replaced with MCS 007 v7.0.

Following industry consultation, the MCS Heat Pump Technical Working Group have updated the Heat Pump Product Standard, which has been substantially rewritten. Changes to the standard includes the introduction of the requirement to input heat capacity and sound power level performance data in the MCS Installations Database (MID) as well as updates and changes to definitions. A significant change is broadening the scope of technologies to now include air-air heat pumps and hybrid heat pumps.

More specifically, the update includes:

  • Updates to various standard references.
  • New requirements for hybrid heat pump units.
  • New requirements for air-to-air heat pumps.
  • New definitions added/amended, including:
  • Hybrid heat pump unit
  • Bivalent temperature
  • Standard rating conditions
  • Coefficient of Performance (COP) / Primary Energy Ratio (PER)
  • Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) / Seasonal Primary Energy Ratio (SPER)
  • Seasonal Space Heating Energy Efficiency (SSHEE)
  • Supplementary Heat Source
  • Conversion Coefficient (CC)
  • Weather Coefficient Capability
  • P-rated Capacity
  • Sound Power Level
  • Removal of any reference to ‘very high temperature heat pumps’.
  • Introduced a requirement for Sound Power Level Performance data to be input in the MID and published on the MCS Product Directory.
  • Introduced Appendix B – performance data template which includes a template for the heat pump capacity data to be input in the MID and published on the MCS Product Directory.
  • Removal of the word ‘safety’ requirements and instead use ‘operation’ requirements
  • Removal of appendix A (Issue 6.1)

There is a two-year transition for this update, and compliance with this issue becomes mandatory from 24 April 2027.
