What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK Government scheme that lets consumers earn money by exporting excess electricity from their small-scale renewables, such as solar PV, small wind turbines, or micro CHP, back to the grid.

As an installer, helping your customers understand SEG can make your service more attractive and competitive.

Eligibility

Your customers installations will be eligible for SEG if they:

Are MCS certified.
Have a registered smart meter that records exported electricity (even if they aren’t signed up to a smart tariff).
Meet the size limits: Solar PV or small wind, up to 5MW capacity: Micro CHP, up to 50kW capacity.

Becoming Certified

MCS certification is also a route to accessing incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, Home Energy Scotland Grants and Loans Scheme, and funded schemes such as ECO4.

For MCS certified installers, this means better access to customers actively seeking MCS certified installers in order to benefit from these funding schemes.
