What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), administered by Ofgem on behalf of DESNZ (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero), provides grants for property owners in England and Wales to replace existing fossil fuel heating with low-carbon heating systems.

It provides £7,500 towards the cost of an air-source heat pump (ASHP) or ground source heat pump (GSHP) installation, or £5,000 towards the cost of a biomass boiler.

To be eligible, consumers must:

Own the property they are applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property they rent out to tenants).
Be replacing fossil fuel heating systems - such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

Deliver work under the BUS

You must be MCS certified to deliver work under the BUS, and it is installers that apply for the grant on behalf of their customers. You should discount the value of the grant from the total cost paid by your customer, and include this in your quote.

To access the BUS funding (once you are MCS certified), you will need to create a Boiler Upgrade Scheme installer account on Ofgem’s website.
