Becoming MCS certified demonstrates that you work to industry-recognised standards, giving your customers confidence in the quality of your installations.
MCS is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewables. That means that becoming certified means you join a growing community of installers that are committed to delivering high-quality installations. It can benefit your business in a number of ways, including:
Give your customers confidence
Achieving MCS certification increases your visibility among customers who are actively seeking certified professionals. It helps to demonstrate that you adhere to industry-recognised standards, showing you are a quality, reputable renewable energy installer at the forefront of this growing industry. You’ll be listed on the MCS “Find an Installer” search tool, which helps customers find installers near them for renewable technology installations.
Access to government funded work
MCS certification is required for government incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan, Warm Homes: Local Grant and others. It therefore opens doors to customers who are looking to benefit from these funding schemes.
Boost your reputation
The MCS mark strengthens your business credibility, increases consumer confidence, and provides industry recognition. Being certified allows you to use the MCS mark on your advertising materials.
Ensure regulatory compliance
Holding MCS certification assures regulators, insurers, lenders, and customers that you are committed to upholding quality and are aligned with industry standards. If you’re doing work that involves Building Control regulations or NHBC (National House Building Council), they may ask for an MCS certificate as a way of demonstrating quality assurance. A number of planning authorities also require an MCS certificate.
Many insurance companies also require MCS for renewable technologies that are installed at a policyholder’s address. MCS cannot be given retrospectively, so not having MCS at the point of installation may cause issues for your customers when they come to insure their homes. Additionally, finance companies may require MCS to enable access to their most competitive lending rates. For these organisations, MCS is seen to reduce their risk under the Consumer Credit Act.
Stay supported
MCS provides support to certified installers to help them succeed. Whether it’s the latest technical guidance straight from our Technical Working Groups or access to our monthly newsletter exclusive to certified installers, we work directly with our installer base to help make their certification a success. Through our Working Groups and consultation processes, MCS also gives installers the opportunity to contribute to the development of industry standards.
As an MCS certified member, you can also gain free trade body membership. MCS certified heat pump installers are entitled to a free affiliate membership with the Heat Pump Association. MCS certified solar PV and/or battery storage installers are entitled to a free affiliate membership with Solar Energy UK.
Future-proof your business
With more MCS certified installers than ever before, you can ensure that your business stays ahead as the UK transitions to net zero and the market continues to grow.

To support you in achieving your MCS certification, we’ve outlined the steps that you’ll need to take for the current MCS Installer Scheme.
You might have seen that we’re redeveloping our installer Scheme – this will be happening over the next 12-18 months and will change the current application process slightly. However, Certification Bodies are still accepting applications for the current MCS Scheme, so you should still go ahead and start the application process as soon as possible.
To become an MCS certified installer, you will be assessed against the MCS 001-1 Standard, along with the specific technical Standard for each technology you wish to become certified for.
Before applying, you should familiarise yourself with the appropriate Standards and be ready to demonstrate how your business meets these requirements during the assessment.
Visit the Standards & Tools Library here.
In order to gain MCS certification, your business will be asked to demonstrate how you engage the services of skilled, competent, and experienced individuals to fulfil each activity required to meet and maintain the requirements of the Scheme.
This includes assigning a Nominated Technical Person (NTP) within your business for each technology you are certified for, as outlined in the MCS 025 Standard. Your NTP(s) must be competent in the technical aspects associated with each technology that you are certified for.
You will need to demonstrate the operation of a Quality Management System (QMS). You should ensure that this is developed and in place within your business before you apply. Your QMS will help to demonstrate how you ensure consistent quality of installations.
A common misconception is that a QMS must be a lengthy and complex set of documents. Another is that you need to purchase a software service to manage it. Neither is the case.
What matters is that your QMS is:
To comply with the current Scheme, installers will need to join a Consumer Code that is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI). There are two Consumer Codes available to join in relation to MCS:
It is recommended to contact both Consumer Codes to establish the best fit for your business, compare costs, and establish onboarding timescales.
Once your business is ready, apply to an MCS accredited Certification Body. A Certification Body is an independent, third party organisation that will ensure you install the renewable technology in line with the MCS Standards. They will assess how your business operates and inspect your nominated first installation to ensure compliance with Scheme requirements.
Your choice of Certification Body will depend on your business needs, but will likely be influenced by the services each Certification Body has to offer, whether they can provide MCS certification for the technologies you wish to install, and if you have an existing relationship with them. The Certification Body you choose will guide you through the certification process.
All of the Certification Bodies have different prices for becoming certified, and timescales can also differ for the assessment(s). You should discuss these details with your Certification Body and they can direct you to their MCS application form.
Once you have completed an application with your Certification Body and they have reviewed it, they will conduct their assessment activities. The assessments will take place in two stages:
To support the site based installation assessment, you’ll need to provide details of recent/current installations with your Certification Body and arrange access for them to conduct the assessment. Your Nominee and Nominated Technical Person will need to be available for the compliance assessments.
Following successful assessment, your Certification Body will then issue you with a certificate – this is a document that confirms you have been successfully assessed against MCS001-1 and the relevant MCS Installation Standard(s).
Following the assessment, there will be a meeting arranged between you and your Certification Body to discuss any non-conformities.
A non-conformity is a compliance or quality issue found during an assessment. Non-conformities can represent things to improve, or if more significant, issues that need to be addressed urgently. Your Certification Body will explain if they find any non-conformities and what they are.
If non-conformities are raised, you need to resolve these and return corrective and preventative actions to your CB within 4 weeks of assessment. If they are satisfied with your response for each non-conformity, they will be closed.
Once you have followed all of the above steps, you will have achieved MCS certification. Your Certification Body will award you a licence to operate as MCS certified and to use the MCS certification mark.
They will also set you up with access to the MCS Installations Database, give you the ‘MCS Certified’ logo and materials for you to use in your marketing, and list you on the MCS Find an Installer tool.

I need some support with my application to become MCS certified. Who should I contact?
If you need any further guidance or support regarding the process for becoming MCS certified, please call our Customer Support team on 0333 103 8130. If you have any queries on your specific application, you should contact the Certification Body you have applied to.
How much does it cost to become MCS certified?
The total cost can vary, as there are a few different costs associated with achieving and maintaining certification. You need to consider the costs for applying to a Certification Body (these can vary between different bodies), the Consumer Code, and then ongoing costs such as the £30 fee for every certified installation you register with MCS. We recommend you look on the relevant websites for Certification Bodies and Consumer Codes to find the associated costs.
I need some training to become MCS certified. How can I find a course?
You can find a list of MCS approved training courses here, broken down by technology. Our tool allows you to search for MCS approved training courses in your area.
How do I update my installer listing on the MCS website (find an installer search) once I am certified?
Your Certification Body inputs your details into the MCS Installations Database (MID) and can help to update the information contained in your advertised installer listing. With thousands of website visits from consumers looking for an MCS certified installer, it is important that your information is accurate and up to date.
