What is solar heating?

Solar heating uses sunlight to produce heat.

Solar heating panels, or solar collectors, are installed on your roof to capture the sun’s warmth. They heat water stored in a cylinder, using a safe liquid mix that prevents freezing in colder months. This system is ideal for heating spaces, and providing hot water, especially popular for heating swimming pools.

Grants & Incentives

As of 2023, there is zero VAT rate on solar heating and other energy-efficient installations, which removes VAT on both materials and labour costs. This tax relief is applied automatically by installers and helps reduce upfront costs significantly.

What to expect from your MCS certified installer

Consumers should expect a high standard of work, thorough documentation, support for incentive applications, and clear warranty terms from an MCS certified installer.

  • Your chosen technology should be working as expected.
  • MCS certificate within 10 working days of completion.
  • Handover pack upon completion, including key resources such as product details and workmanship warranty.
  • A system designed and installed in accordance to the MCS Standards.

Living with your technology

Maintenance costs for solar water heating systems are generally very low.

Most solar water heating systems come with a five-year or ten-year warranty and require little maintenance.
