What is battery storage?

Battery storage is a system that can store electricity so that you can use it another time. It can also be used to draw power from the grid when it is at a cheaper rate than normal, allowing you to save money.

Battery storage offers you the flexibility to choose when you buy or use your electricity, meaning that you can use the energy you generate at mid-day in the evening, or store off-peak, cheaper electricity for use later. There are three main ways you might install it:

At the same time as new solar panels

Many people choose to add a battery when they get solar panels fitted. This means your installer can design the system as one package, making sure the panels and battery work perfectly together. It’s often the most cost-effective option.

Adding to an existing solar system

If you already have solar panels installed, you can still add a battery. A certified installer can connect a battery to your existing system so you can start storing the energy you generate to use when you wish.

Installing a battery on its own

Even without solar panels, a battery can still help you save money as you can charge it overnight on cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs and use that energy when prices are higher. This can reduce your bills and help protect you from peak-time energy prices.

Once your battery is fully charged, you can earn money on the electricity that you produce by selling excess energy back to the grid using the Smart Export Guarantee, or an export tariff.

How does battery storage work?

Excess energy generated by your renewable technology systems, such as solar panels, can be stored in a battery for later use.

Battery storage systems often work alongside solar power, whether added to an existing installation or fitted as part of a new installation. It ties into the idea of using your home as a ‘power station’.

For example, you can charge your battery when the sun is shining throughout the day, then once the sun has gone down, you can use the energy stored in your battery to power your oven, washing machine or turn on your lights – all for free.

Costs and considerations

To choose the right battery storage system for your home, you will first need to consider how much energy you want your system to be able to store, and how much energy it can deliver at once. For 2025, the maximum power the battery can accept when charging, for an MCS certified battery storage system, has been 5.95kW.

In 2025, the average cost for a battery storage installation is just over £8,900.

The lifespan of a battery will depend on the model, so be sure to look for this information before you make a decision.

It is common for a battery storage system to be connected to solar panels. This gives you flexibility in how you power your home. The excess electricity your solar panels generate can either be sold back to the grid or stored in your battery. If this is something you are considering, make sure to check that your chosen battery storage is compatible with your existing or potential solar panel setup.

Why choose an MCS certified installer?

MCS is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewables like battery storage. We set the standards you should always expect from an MCS certified installer.

MCS certification ensures that our installers install renewable technologies to the best possible quality, while also adhering to industry-recognised safety practices when working in and around your home or small business.

We encourage you to check an installer’s certification status through our online Find an Installer online search, or by calling our Helpdesk. To ensure that your installer has maintained certification throughout, it’s worth checking as you get a quote, before you sign your contract, and before the installation starts.

Find an installer near you

If you are ready to explore installing battery storage in your home or small business, you can find an MCS certified battery storage installer near you using our ‘Find an Installer’ online search.

Your battery storage system should be working as expected.

You will receive an MCS certificate within 10 working days of completion.

You will receive a handover pack upon completion, including key information such as product details and workmanship warranty.

Your new system will be designed and installed in accordance with MCS Standards.

Living with Battery Storage

A battery’s lifespan depends on its type and how often it’s charged and discharged fully. Manufacturers usually provide an estimated lifespan in years or the number of full charge cycles estimated.

Most battery storage systems monitor battery health and will alert you when a replacement is needed. Some companies also offer leasing or replacement options for worn-out batteries and handle safe recycling or disposal.

If you also have solar panels, you can expect to replace your battery at least once during the life of your solar panel system.

Grants & Incentives

Smart Export Guarantee

You may be able to earn money through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This is a scheme that pays consumers for excess electricity they export back to the grid from renewable sources, such as solar panels. Battery storage plays a crucial role in this setup by enhancing a household’s ability to maximise earnings under SEG.

You need to apply directly to a SEG tariff supplier to get paid. The Ofgem website lists the energy suppliers that provide SEG tariffs.

Our case studies highlight real-life success stories from consumers, showcasing the positive impact of battery storage systems on their home.

“The technologies have significantly decreased our energy bills, and we’ve also been able to earn money by selling the surplus electricity generated from our solar panels (and stored through the battery storage) back to the national grid through our supplier.” – Stephen
