What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government scheme that allows you to earn money from the renewable electricity you generate at home. If you have solar panels, a small wind turbine, or micro CHP, and live in England, Scotland, or Wales, you could get paid for the extra electricity you export back to the National Grid. Certain licensed energy suppliers, called SEG Licensees, are required to offer these tariffs, so you can choose the one that works best for you.

Eligibility

You’re eligible if:

  • You have solar panels  or small wind (5MW or less), or micro CHP (50kW or less) installed in your home/business.
  • You have a smart meter that records your exported electricity.
  • Your system was installed by an MCS certified installer using certified products. When signing up to a SEG tariff they might ask for your MCS certificate to confirm this.

How to apply

Once you have your system installed:

  • Choose a SEG supplier – This can be different from your current energy company.
  • Pick a suitable tariff 
  • Apply online – Use the supplier’s SEG application form and include your smart meter data and MCS certificate.

What if I already get Feed-in Tariff payments?

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) closed in March 2019, and was closed to new applicants from 1 April 2019. Those who receive FiT payments can continue doing so for the duration of their contract, and some suppliers allow you to keep your FiT tariff and sign on to their SEG export tariff.
