What is a scam?

A scam is a scheme that is aimed at taking your money or personal information. Scammers approach in a variety of different ways including email, post, telephone, or even by doorstep calling.

What can a scam look like?

In the renewables industry, scams can come in many forms. This page provides information on how to avoid becoming a victim of a scam, and what to do if you fall victim to one.

Many people offer free checks or services for renewable energy systems, system upgrades or accessories, extended warranty products, or misleading claims such as needing replacement items.

Some installers can also pose as MCS certified even when they are not, or some scammers can falsely claim to be from MCS.

Here are some important things to remember:

  • We never share your details with installers or ask them to contact you on our behalf. If an installer claims this is the case, this is untrue.
  • Cold callers or door-sellers often offer urgent deals. Don’t sign up for anything on the spot. Take time to explore the options available to you.
  • Some online adverts are fake. It’s important that you take the time to check if any claims are accurate before buying.
  • Scammers may pretend to be from genuine installers. Always check their credentials.

If you think you have fallen victim of a scam or need to talk to someone about activity you find suspicious, please contact our Customer Support Helpdesk.

When will MCS contact me?

MCS will never cold call you, and you will not be asked to purchase items like warranties from us.

Our team will reach out to you if:

  • You have contacted us requesting information.
  • You’ve made a complaint.
  • You’ve had an MCS installation through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme – our Outreach team will contact you regarding your recent installation, which includes questions about your experience, the handover provided by your installer and how your technology is performing.
