Home Energy Scotland Grant & Loan

What is the HES Grant & Loan Scheme?

The HES Grant and Loan Scheme is a Scottish Government initiative that provides homeowners in Scotland with a grant, interest-free loan or a combination of both to help cover the costs of installing renewable technologies, such as heat pumps and solar heating, in their homes.

What funding is available?

The HES Grant & Loan Scheme allows consumers to access:

  • Grant funding of up to £7,500 for air source and ground/water source heat pumps and biomass boilers, with an additional £7,500 of funding available as an optional interest-free loan.
  • There are different levels of funding available for solar heating, wind turbines and other measures under the Scheme.

Rural uplift

An uplift of £1,500 is available to households in remote rural and island areas, as well as off-gas accessible rural areas, as defined by the Scottish Government’s Urban Rural Classification. This means you could get a £9,000 grant towards a heat pump if you qualify.

Eligibility

You must be a homeowner in Scotland to apply for the scheme. You do not need to be in receipt of benefits to qualify.

The funding is available for making improvements that are recommended in your home:

  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
  • Home Energy Improvement Report
  • Home Renewable Selector Report

Eligibility terms and conditions

To be eligible for the Home Energy Scotland (HES) Grant and Loan, your installer must be MCS certified and use MCS certified products. You can find an MCS certified installer in Scotland using our ‘Find an installer’ tool.

HES Grant & Loan Scheme for installers

To be eligible to install clean heating or renewable systems under the HES Grant & Loan scheme, all installers must be MCS certified for the technology they are installing.
